Nirushan treats jaw, face and neck pain full-time and is experienced in evaluating and treating TMD and cervical spine problems. He is currently completing his Certified Cervical and Temporomandibular Therapist certification — the same designation Brett holds. Brett is closely involved in every case in this clinic. Nirushan can usually see a new patient within a week.

Nirushan Guruparan earned a Bachelor’s degree in Human Biology from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from York University before completing his Master of Science in Physical Therapy at Queen’s University. He has practised physiotherapy in both Ontario and British Columbia.

Over seven years of orthopaedic practice treating the neck and head, he has progressively devoted his work to the assessment and treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMD), craniofacial and orofacial pain, headaches and cervical spine conditions.

His advanced training includes Dr. Jeffrey Mannheimer’s Mini-Residency in the Comprehensive Evaluation & Treatment of the Sub-Occipital, Craniofacial & Temporomandibular Complex — an intensive program emphasizing interdisciplinary care between physiotherapists and dental professionals — as well as Evaluation and Treatment of Temporomandibular Disorders and Craniofacial Pain: Level I with Michael Karegeannes, current President of the PTBCCT, and advanced TMD training with Steve Kraus, a pioneer in the physiotherapy management of temporomandibular disorders. He is currently pursuing his Certified Cervical & Temporomandibular Therapist (CCTT) certification through the PTBCCT, the international organization dedicated to advancing physiotherapy expertise in temporomandibular, cervical and orofacial pain conditions.

Nirushan is also certified in dry needling and has completed Basic Bobath training for the rehabilitation of individuals with neurological conditions. His approach combines manual therapy, joint mobilization, soft-tissue techniques, exercise prescription and dry needling, tailored to each patient’s presentation. With a particular interest in the relationship between the jaw, cervical spine and craniofacial system, he works collaboratively with dentists and other healthcare professionals when multidisciplinary care is indicated.

Outside the clinic, Nirushan creates educational content on TMJ/TMD, jaw pain and craniofacial rehabilitation.

Susan is a Registered Massage Therapist who brings close to 30 years of hands-on experience to Headway’s Buccal Massage service. She focuses on the jaw, face, head and neck, combining gentle intraoral work with external massage to release the deep chewing muscles that are hard to reach any other way.

Susan has been thoroughly trained in buccal massage by experienced buccal massage therapists and by Brett Weiss, Headway’s owner and TMJ physiotherapist. As a certified Combined Decongestive Therapist through the Dr. Vodder School, she also has advanced training in Manual Lymphatic Drainage. That makes her a strong fit for patients recovering from jaw (orthognathic), plastic or other facial surgery, where reducing swelling and easing tissue restriction can speed recovery. She also treats jaw clenching, limited mouth opening, facial tension, and headaches linked to the neck and jaw.

At Headway, Susan works closely with our TMJ physiotherapists. For physio patients, their assessment guides where she focuses, and she follows with her own soft-tissue evaluation so each session is tailored to you.

Her broader training includes Shiatsu, Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy, The Trager® Approach, Rhythmic Movement Training, and Pregnancy, Infant and Oncology Massage. Clients describe her approach as gentle yet effective, grounded in careful listening and a calm, nurturing presence.
